Moon Cake Festival

by Jason on September 20, 2010

Callie and I ate dinner with a few Taiwanese families from my church on Sunday night.  These families told me about the upcoming Moon Cake Festival this week.  I’ll relate the stories they told me about Chinese culture.  This particular story is at least a thousand years old, probably more, and it comes from mainland China.

A long time ago there was a king who wanted to be immortal.  He sought his whole life scouring the world for a way to live forever.  He was also a bad king.  Eventually, he found a man who had a particular potion.  The man said that the potion would make him immortal.

A certain woman knew the king was bad and took matters into her own hands.  Before the king could drink the potion, she took it from him and drank it herself so the king would not live forever.  The potion caused her to float and fly upwards until she eventually went to the moon.  She resides there to this day.

So every year at this time the Chinese eat moon cake in the evening time with their families to commemorate the occasion.  I will say that the moon cake was rather delectable.

Just be careful….not all moon cakes are delectable. I’ve had a few nasty ones, personally. 🙂 Glad you survived your first typhoon!
