Lessons From Cocha Cashu

by Jason on July 24, 2012

One of the biggest lessons I am receiving from the jungle here at Cocha Cashu is to go with the flow of life. I don’t need to go chasing after riches, wealth, animals or anything else. Life is all around me and will come to me. I just have to be watching. I just have to be aware.

Always be watching. Be observant. This morning I had just woken up and was sitting in my tent. I noticed a small mammal walk by. I later found out it was a coati, a member of the raccoon family. I saw monkeys four times today. I saw a beautiful purple bird today which is called polla de agua morada in Spanish. The literal translation on that is purple water chicken. I saw a number of other species today as well. I wake up when the sun comes up. I go to be soon after the sun goes down.

There isn’t anything else to do here except go with the flow of life here. This is the first time I’ve had the experience of washing clothes by hand and hanging them to dry. Washing clothes by hand and drying them was easier than I thought. This is also my first experience of showering in the lake every day. I take jugs and pour them over me instead of swimming in the lake like the others. I don’t want to be swimming with caimans or piranhas just yet.

I’m getting used to all the sounds. I heard what I thought was a dog barking last night, but there are no dogs around here that make the sound of a dog barking.
